JCole's Cigar Reviews

I periodically review cigars and post the reviews on Cigar Forums such as Cigar Weekly, Club Stogie, Cigar Utopia, and Herfers Paradise. I thought I would put them all in one place, for those who enjoy them.

601 Habano Esplendido

A Good Story with No Ending

The line was created by José "Pepin" Garcia and is manufactured at the Tabacalera Cubana factory in the Estelí, Nicaragua for EO Premium Brands. Introduced in August of 2006, and is also available in Connecticut Shade.

Size: Esplendido 7" by 49 ring.

The first thing that I noticed about the cigar was the beautifully oily Habano wrapper, which had minimal veins, smooth appearance and a pigtail. My drink of choice with the cigar was a nice Evan Williams Single Barrel. The cigar started out medium bodied with a hint of pepper and spice. After the first third of the cigar, I could taste the familiar Cuban cigar like twang that all the Pepin cigars (Tatuaje, Pepin Blue, Cabiguan) seem to display. Draw was perfect, burn was a little crooked but evened out in the last third, the wrapper split and unraveled a little near the last third.

I enjoyed the flavors the cigar displayed on my palate but it seemed like the cigar was building toward a strength and finish that never occurred. Some might say it is a great cliff hanger, but I felt its finish was just disappointing. The 601 Habano Esplendido is a beautiful cigar that displays a lot of qualities that cigar smokers are looking for, I would say it is above average and better than many cigars on the market but not super or excellent.
